MSGT Guadalupe Richard Mendez (USAF Retired), age 73, of San Antonio, Texas passed away July 7, 2016 in Castroville. Visitation will be Thursday, July 21, 2016 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Tondre-Guinn Funeral Home with the Holy Rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. A Graveside Service with Full Military Honors will be held Friday, July 22, 2016 at 10:15 a.m. at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas. Interment will follow at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
Guadalupe was born December 12, 1942 in Bryan, Texas to Nicanor and Adela Garcia Mendez. He graduated from Stephen F. Austin High School in Bryan, and joined the U.S. Air Force in 1961. He served during the Vietnam War, with a specialty in Law Enforcement and special operations until his retirement in 1985. On January 15, 1965 he married Monika Perlinger in Vienna, Austria.
Guadalupe was preceded in death by his parents; and his sister, Mary Collins.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Monika Mendez of San Antonio; children, Melissa and Richard Morales of Natalia, Antonio Nichols of Vienna Austria and Marilyn Clay of Austin; grandchildren, Richard (Brandi) Mendez, Estevan Cavazos, Pia Lauren Nichols and Aaron (Felicia) Clay; great grandchildren, Ethan Cavazos, McKinsley Mendez and "two on the way", Mason Mendez and Noah Clay; siblings, Tess (Gerald) Geistweidt, Nick (Alice) Mendez.
