Graveside services for Alvin Roy Phelps, Sr., 56, of Bryan are set for 10 a.m. Monday at Smetana Cemetery.
The Rev. John McCaffrey of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church will officiate.
Visitation is set from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Memorial Funeral Chapel.
Mr. Phelps died Thursday afternoon in Burleson County.
He was born in Caldwell, where he was a lifelong resident. Mr. Phelps worked for Alenco Manufacturing for more than 30 years. He helped create and organize the Brazos county Precinct’s Volunteer Fire Department in 1978. Mr. Phelps was elected as the fire chief in 1979 and retired in 1992. He remained active in the fire department and was one of the leading organizers for rural fir protection in District 4 in Brazos County. Mr. Phelps was president of the Brazos county Firefighters Association for six years. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Alvin R. and Tina Phelps, Jr. of Fayetteville, Ark., and Michael and Shannon Phelps of Crowley, Texas; a daughter, Susan Phelps of Clay; a sister, Martha Regmund of Smetana; and two grandchildren.
