Vernon was a close friend. Sensitive, good-hearted. I stayed at his place on occasion when visiting Bryan. I remet Vernon in Austin and we continued the friendship through his move back to Bryan. He cared about being an SFA grad, lived his band memories, and put effort into staying connected and helping SFAers stay connected through this website. We all owe him that and more.

Although I moved from Bryan after the 9th grade, Vernon was a riend from our

6th grade class together at Travis Elementary in 1954. A good guy.

Vernon played Clarinet in the band as as Mr Mac said one time to Vernon, "Vernon, we are playing this to My tempo not Dave Brubeck's"!

Vernon had 6 special SFA Broncos baseball hats made.  Vernon had one, I had one , Mark Hall had one, Maybe Bill Shultz and I am not sure of the rest.

Didn't think he was ill or even close to passing.

I missed out last class reunion as I was playing with my Band at the Chriesman Comunity Center.

I am sorry to read of his passing.

For those who are left, Please take care of yourselves and don't do anything dumb.

We are too few in number as it is.

thanks, Don Ling class of 1961 SFA.

Mr. Vernon Gomez was a great person, who loved all the women in his class of 1959, 1960,1961, 1962 AND 1963,especially Linda Cobb.  He love to talk on the telephone, IT was hard to shut him up. He loved to speak to everyone..  He lived in Austin for a While and then moved to Bryan, Texas, "The City with a Future." He served on the Committee for the Class of 1961. He adored the Class Slogan: "We are the class that is full of fun, we are the class of 61."  We will all miss Vernon J. Gomes, may he rest in peace, Amen. "O my Jesus, forgive our Sins, save us the Fires of Hell, and lead all souls to heaven, especiall those most worthy of thy MERCY."

I wrote a long paragraph about Vernon but for whatever reason it said it couldn't be posted. Now I'll be more concise. What amazed me about Vernon was his memory. He told me he could remember the seating order in our elementary classrooms!  I didn't remember him from Crockett but he remembered all of us.

He was wonderful about keeping in touch with our classmates and never forgot a birthday. He was a very kind, considerate man. I hope he found happiness in his last years. Rest In Peace, dear Vernon.

When I joined the SFA Class of '63 site, Vernon sent a message to welcome me and share his memories of my brother, Jack.  We stayed in touch by email over the years and Vernon shared his research on his Goodwin ancestry.  He was so charming and so kind and I miss him.  I pray for comfort for all his family and all those who loved.him.  If you know any of his family, or know who cared for him in his last days, please send the information in a message so I can contact them.

I found a more recent photo of Vernon on his facebook page.  I tried to post it to his profile but was blocked.  I sent it to the funeral home for use in his obituary notice.  I also sent my contact information with the request to give it to any of Vernon's family.  I am not certain he is survived by any close family, but he mentioned cousins in Anson and Franklin, TX.  They were Goodwins or Fergusons I believe.
